Clifden, Ireland: Our favorite expatriate, Karen vicencio sent this report from Ireland. “I went to a driving clinic sponsered by the CPBS yesterday. It was held at Judy Cazabon's place in Cleggan(up the road from Clifden). We had absolutely fabulous weather, very sunny with just a bit of wind. We met at the Cazabon's, then drove the ponies to...the beach! When the tide goes out, there is a mile or more of sand, and you can drive across it to an island. They had set out a dressage court and cones course on the sand. We had an informal dressage competition, which was won by Martin Nee. We (me driving Brannigan) were second, thanks to "sabotage" by the reader of the test-she forgot to tell us about a walk, and we lost by one point;). It was fun. We had a real dressage judge judging us (but I don't remember her name!), and we got back marked tests with comments, which was very helpful.

We then worked on the cones, which was REALLY fun. Everyone was pretty conservative on the first run, by the third run most people were going full speed ahead! I had one exciting moment when I went through a water hazard-and discovered there was a VERY large hole to one side of it! The cart tipped WAY sideways, I thought I was going swimming, but we were going fast enough Brannigan yanked it back right side up,and I avoided a dunking.

Our clinician, Pat Hanley, was sporting a cast and crutches, stemming from what he termed a "minor" incident, where a young horse tipped his cart into a ditch. He had one exciting moment himself, when he was standing on the back of a carriage, the driver decided to move on and didn't realize he wasn't sitting, and when the pony started forward, Paddy made a very fast unscheduled exit from the carriage. He wasn't injured, just a bit bemused. He's apparently done the same thing to a number of people from the stories I heard told at the pub after the clinic.

Because we went through a number of water hazards(big puddles on the sand left from the tide going out), we all ended up pretty wet and sandy, and back at the Cazabons' the hose was a popular place to get all the sand off the carriages.

We also got to take the ponies for a good long fast gallop on the beach something you rarely get to do when driving. We were all too busy driving or watching to take photos, so sorry, no pictures! A shame, because it was quite a sight to see all the ponies and carriages galloping about on the beach, not something you see every day!”
