Ocala, FL: Eliott Blackman has what is surely one of the most fun jobs in the Connemara world!! She trains and rides not one, but two, Connemaras stallions. Both were sired by the imported stallion, *Gunsmoke. WH Top Gun is out of Ballywhim Candace (by Greystone Dallen McMor) and is owned by Jim and Nancy Kilcrease. Foothill’s Field Marshall aka Bruiser is out of Foothill’s Maybee (by Aladdin). He is owned by Donna Duckworth. Eliott has been eventing both stallions for over three years now, and has taken both to the USEF eventing championships for the last two years. It is a rare weekend when either one or the other does not bring home a blue ribbon.
This past weekend she was out with both again plus her Irish Sporthorse mare, Talk’s Cheap, at the Rockinghorse Stables Spring Horse Trials. Top Gun and Talk’s Cheap compete in the Preliminary Division, while Bruiser competes at Training Level. All three of Eliott’s rides had dressage scores under 30 and clean stadium rounds…all three were in first place going into the Cross Country phase! People were talking about a Trifecta. Top Gun went out first and jumped clean but had a few time penalties. This landed him in fifth place, great for only his second preliminary outing. Talk’s Cheap had one stop to end up in tenth. There went the Trifecta. Bruiser went out early Saturday morning and dashed home under the time and with NO jumping faults. Eliott said, “he was a dream out there.” He had led from start to finish! So not a Trifecta but a great accomplishment for Elliott. By the way, Eliott comes by her talent with Connemaras naturally. Her mother, Cathy Blackmon, treasurer of the ACPS, has ridden the Hall of Fame winner, Hideaway’s Special Delivery for many years. He is by TopGun’s grandsire, Dallen McMor. Nice to keep it all in the family!
