Attendees to the ACPS National Meeting of 2025 were able to attend a lecture given by UMASS Amherst Agriculture Professor, Dr Masoud Hashemi. The lecture was informative, with the emphasis on MANAGEMENT. As our professor said, even a “sacrifice paddock” does not mean that it can be ignored. Pasture rehabilitation was discussed from the ground up…..with the ground being one of the most important components. From soil testing to grass species, from drainage to when to rotate, it was all in the presentation. Healthy pastures are better maintained than rehabbed…and amazingly enough (as one of the illustrations in the slide deck will show), a healthy pasture that is rotated off of correctly will sustain MORE animals than a similar space with fewer animals…..so yes, maybe you can get another pony or two.
