On June 18, 2001, a dark bay colt with a big white star was foaled at Mary Lou Thall’s Triple Creek Farm in New York. When born, no one knew that this foal, by Greystone McErrill out of the TB mare Wise Precept, would grow up to represent his country in combined driving. This friendly youngster was officially named Tricreek Greystone Laughlin, and nicknamed Lucky. I first met Lucky the summer of 2003 when he was just two as I was looking for a combined driving prospect. After purchasing Lucky in September of that year, he moved to my farm in Delaware and so began our partnership. First broke to ride then to drive, Lucky’s education progressed over the years and his show career began. There were multiple wins at the lower levels of combined driving and in 2009 Lucky began competing at the advanced level. Here too he continued to excel, winning in the US and Canada. In 2009, Lucky placed 5th at the USEF National Single Horse Championships. In 2010, Lucky went to Florida for the season and came home winning the title of the “Triple Crown of Driving” and he was a bronze medal winner at the USEF Championships. In June of that year, Lucky was selected to represent the US at the World Singles Driving Championships held in Pratoni del Vivaro, Italy. A huge honor for us, Lucky and I did our best in Italy and came home the highest placed Americans, finishing 19th out of 72 competitors. Lucky was also awarded 4th place at the World Championships for his performance in the cones phase. As the year came to a close, Lucky was victorious once again as he became the USEF Single Driving Horse of the Year. Lucky is only 10 years old in 2011 so there are more titles to strive for and plenty of drives left for us to take.
